The United Nations has defined good governance as governance that promotes equity, participation, pluralism, transparency, accountability, and the rule of law, so that it is effective, efficient, and enduring (UN, 2017).

Wetlands are particularly vulnerable ecosystems which are threatened by various processes and impacts that take on a new dimension and scope with climate change; even more so in circum-Mediterranean environments. Their protection and conservation, especially in the case of peri-urban wetlands, requires the proactivity of all social and economic sectors in their area of influence. This implies that all agents have at their disposal both accurate information based on scientific knowledge and adequate mechanisms for participation and governance.

Environmental governance is a key aspect in the sustainable management of wetlands to ensure their long-term conservation. The way societies choose to govern their natural resources has important implications for the quality of life of their people, the sustainability of their economies and the conservation of their natural and cultural heritage. This makes the management of wetlands extraordinarily complex, both technically and socially.

The aim of this session will be to share and discuss best practices and innovative tools for wetland governance. Participants will include institutions with responsibilities for wetland management at international, national, and local levels, as well as representatives of civil society. Case studies will also be presented to address the short-, medium- and long-term challenges facing wetland governance in the Mediterranean.
